In january 2009 I bought a used (analogue) Nikon FE camera, and I've been taking pictures and trying to become a better photographer since then.
Why an analogue camera? Why not buy an digital instead? Surely the advantages of digital photography can't be beaten, right? There are several reasons why I got the Nikon FE (which is an excellent camera by the way). Lack of money was one, the fact that I want to learn this art 'the hard way' (one shot, one opportunity, another 44 eurocents wasted if I fail) was another.
But, most importantly, I think that even today hardly any digital photography can match what black and white film offers in terms of atmosphere, texture and grain. To me they are as important as composition, lighting, subject, etc, and I think that in those areas specifically digital photography is lacking.
Then again, I have my negatives scanned and I do postproduction of my photographs in Photoshop, so it's not that I'm not seeing the possibilities of digital photography.
Now that I think of it, maybe this kind of work process is a way to combine the best of analogue with the best of digital...
But that's for you to judge...
